May God be with the family of Senator Stevens, former Republican senator from Alaska and World War II veteran. The Senator perished in a plane crash today, along with three other passengers, in Alaska. He had survived a plane crash in which his wife was killed in 1978. Senator Stevens was elected to six terms, but was defeated in 2006 amidst charges of corruption which were later dismissed due to prosecutorial misconduct.
He was most highly regarded by his colleagues.
