Another "civil right"

Yes, we can now add owning a cell phone right along side access to health care....

Have you ever heard of something called the FEDERAL Universal Access Fund? Have you ever thought it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to interpret your phone bill? The two are connected. There is a line item on your phone bill called "Fed. Universal Access Fee." It's small, but every person with a phone pays it, almost. That fee is charged to us because the U.S. Congress, in 1996 (all Dem-controlled), passed a bill that required all telecommunications companies to contribute to a universal access fund so that everyone could have access to telephones, at the time targeting schools, libraries, etc. The companies - being profit-driven and all - just pass that charge on to their customers! Duh! And like all other government programs, this one has now evolved to the point where - and I heard this used as an argument FOR the program - someone who's unemployed can apply for a free cell phone. The circumstance cited in the tv interview was that one individual was able to find a job only three months after he got his free cell phone.

Wow. Wish you could've seen my "shocked" face.
