Voter ID Requirement

Today's letter to editors of local newspapers:

I’m baffled.  I read article after article, hear rants from politician after politician claiming that a requirement to prove who one is in order to vote is unfairly burdensome and will “disenfranchise” some voters.

Miriam Webster’s definition of disenfranchise is “to deprive… of a legal right, or … privilege …; especially : … the right to vote.”

Requiring that one prove they are who they say they are in order to exercise one of the most precious rights we enjoy as citizens  does not deprive them of the right to vote.  Requiring  that one show a photo ID in order to write a check to pay for groceries does not mean that person cannot buy groceries.  It just means they have to prove their identity. All states of which I am aware bend over backward to accommodate those who don’t have proper ID – with provisional or temporary ballots and some even offer state-provided IDs.

What has happened to us?  Have we lost all common sense?  Why would anyone have a problem with ensuring that only those legally entitled to vote are allowed to exercise that precious right?  I’m baffled.
