We were fortunate to have Chris Wheal as our guest speaker on Tuesday. Chris is an American citizen - for 30 years now - but was born in England. His family emmigratedd to South Africa early in his life due mainly to a prohibitive tax burden and a top marginal tax rate of 98%! Chris still spends a great deal of time in his home land so he has been able to stay abreast of the goings on of the government there.
Given that we have been told by our President-elect that health insurance is a "right," Chris' talk to us focused mainly on National Health Care. He shared numerous examples of how it doesn't work and why it really isn't designed to work. A large bureaucracy is designed more for its own survival than for efficiency or quality of care and it just continues to grow. He also shared a personal story of one instance when it worked very well. The Oncology Center for the region - about a 5-hour drive radius - just happened to be located near where he and his wife were located at the time and they were pleased with the quality of the care.
Chris got in touch with us several days before the election to see what he could do to help. He sees our government becoming more and more socialistic and that concerns him. I'm hoping he will be available for future sessions as we try to make plans for the '09 campaigns.
Thank you again, Chris!
